Nuns of the Battlefield Memorial

Did you know there is a monument in Washington D.C. dedicated to the brave nuns who assisted the wounded and dying during the Civil War? This monument, titled “Nuns of the Battlefield Memorial”, was the idea of Ellen Ryan Joy, president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. The auxiliary raised funds and persevered to have this lasting tribute created. Designed and sculpted by Jerome Conner, this beautiful work of art was created and dedicated in 1924.
